My first design challenge after starting decorating classes was my daughter’s room. We had just forfeited our master bedroom to her due to noise concerns and moved into our condo’s 9 x 10 den. The challenge was to re-invent the master into a toddler room and re-think the den to make it as much of a retreat as possible.

My two-year old daughter, one at the time of this project, is a fiery little individual so when it came to decorating her bedroom I opted for a calm, neutral palate. I made sure to add some bright pops of colour (she is a toddler after all) with the carpet tiles and lively floral pattern on the roman shades.

The fabric for the roman shades was the jumping off point for the whole room. The carpet tiles match the two shades of blue-green in the floral pattern and in terms of practicality the carpet tiles are easy to wash so I don’t

have to worry about messes. They also happen to be nearly indestructible despite the abuse my two cats put them through. On the walls I decided to add a light mauve stripe around plate rail height to add some interest to the neutral base and act as an anchor for the alphabet. I painted the letters in colors coordinating with the window shade fabric to further enforce my chosen accent colors.

The resulting bedroom decor is something that she can live with for years to come. The alphabet may come down but there is little else about the room that is babyish. My current challenge is transitioning those same design elements to her bedroom in our new home.
